To boil 1 liter of water over an open fire, you need 0,4 kg of firewood. This gives an average of 12 kg firewood per household to treat, heat, and boil water.
In Kenya, 15 million people lack access to safe water in their homes. This deficiency has detrimental effects on health, education, equality, and the environment. Access to safe water not only improves living conditions but also provides a pathway out of poverty.
Solvatten, a Swedish innovation, utilizes solar energy to purify water. Resembling a book, it harnesses sunlight to eliminate waterborne bacteria within a few hours, preventing diseases like dysentery and cholera. Additionally, Solvatten simultaneously heats the water, making it suitable for hygiene purposes—a unique feature compared to other purification methods.
Solvattens invention provides safe and hot water to people in developing countries in a practical and environmentally friendly manner. Currently operational in over 40 countries, Solvatten has positively impacted more than 450,000 individuals, contributing to all UN Sustainable Development Goals.
As part of our commitment, REAC donates €5,000 annually to support Solvatten’s invaluable work.
