How linear actuators work

Linear actuators are made up of three components that, together, help individuals with acute motion challenges move to sitting or standing positions.

The MedTech industry supplies devices that improve the lives of millions of people around the world. We support the industry by supplying manufacturers with electrical linear actuators that help individuals with motion challenges move to sitting or standing positions.

Linear actuators comprise three essential components:

  • AN ELECTRICAL MOTOR: The most common type of electrical motor used with linear actuators is a direct current (DC) type. Small DC motors are ideal for use in the medical technology industry because they do not require complex external (or built in) power electronics.
  • GEARS: Linear actuators use gears to convert the electrical power into motion. Depending on the manufacturer, they can be either planetary, spur, or worm gears. The most common gear used in linear actuators is the worm gear, which boasts a high torque multiplication.
  • POWER TRANSMISSION: The final element is a mechanism which provides the means to produce motion by the rotation of either a nut or a screw in an assembly.

The advantages of choosing electrical linear actuators for use in the medical technology industry are that they are:

  • EASY TO INSTALL: Compared to linear actuators powered by hydraulic or pneumatic sources, electrical linear actuators are easy to install because they use batteries, which are typically small and simple to replace. Because electrical linear actuators do not require valves, pumps, or compressors, they occupy less space.
  • QUIET OPERATION: Electrical linear actuators provide smooth movements thanks to worm gears and the nut or screw assembly, which produce little sound. This is crucial for use in devices used frequently.
  • SAFE TO USE: A secure connection to the battery, and a self-lock system that prevents the actuator from moving in the wrong direction, make electrical linear actuators safe to use by the public.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE: REAC linear actuators can be customized to meet your application needs. We can even include integrated position-feedback options to provide accurate control. Our linear actuators can be connected to any control system—regardless of the manufacturer.
